Risk-takers. Hungry. Multi-taskers.
In general, these are millenials who are the youngest part of the workforce nowadays- always active and changing, looking for the next big thing. Routine is our pet peeve and challenge is our fuel. Despite us being sharp and keen about the world’s dynamics, most say that we are stubborn and idealistic to a disadvantage. There’s also a negative impression of “entitlement mentality” attached to the word “millennials”.
However, digging deeper into this age group’s mindset, we are also simultaneously exposed with how our predecessors worked hard for something all their lives, yet only had the chance to enjoy and reap these benefits fully, towards their latter shorter years left. Thus, in a nutshell, we want CHANGE- for the way things were, and now aspiring for a holistic paradigm shift which could improve the lives of the next generations.
So here are the top 3 most common misconceptions about us and here’s what we have to say about it:
1. We lack loyalty, thus we jump from one thing to another.
This applies to most of the population who are employed.
The truth: Millenials could still highly thrive in an employee & employer set-up. Engagement and fulfillment is key. The best way to encourage us is to be given enough room for flexibility and the empowerment to decide for ourselves. Making us feel boxed and stuck in a routine is the downfall of our engagement. Challenge us, make us think, and most importantly let us feel valued not just through recognition, but also by fostering good relationships. This way, we won’t feel merely like “the sum of its parts” but instead, we carry the vibe of a whole synergy which needs to function with one another. Plus, the thought of leaving a good culture working environment would crush our hearts so bad, so creating one is the best way to keep us.
2. We want to rush things.
This applies to the aspiring entrepreneurs at the onset without any prior working experience or a solid skill set.
The truth: Taking the entrepreneurial path is the slowest in terms of gaining results by the time that you’re just starting to set it up. We’re fully aware of this fact. We understand that in entrepreneurship, there’s a high risk of failing, and on the other side is a chance for higher returns. Business is definitely not a “get rick quick” scheme, so we’re willing to do temporary sacrifices and embrace the grind early on, for long term sustainability and results. Even then, there were bold youngsters who took this path like Steve Jobs. Now you could just say that, through the fluidity of social media in terms of information, we’re more likely exposed to these icons, which encourage us to both have an open mind and heart to take more bold decisions in unleashing the unknown. And yes, we’re also scared most of the time, yet we act in spite of fear.
3. We are overly confident and full of ourselves.
This tend to manifest when we are focused on attaining a goal and want to get things done on our own.
The truth: We’re still young adults, and we need guidance. We are constantly yearning for a mentor who could show us and lead the way. As much as a toddler needs strong arms to support him to learn how to walk, is the same level of an open mind and wisdom, a millenial seeks from a coach as his pillar to thrive and constantly flourish.
Ultimately, salute to this young age group, for overcoming the constant challenges, generation gaps impose upon us. But remember, we can’t solve the obstacles that come our way all at once. Even superheroes can’t. So have the heart to choose what matters most, channel your energy to positivity, pick your battles, and speak kindness in any way that you can.
